about

I got addicted to Doom 2016. More precisely, I got addicted to the sound designed that's equally legendary as the game itself. Everything from the crickling noises and all the way to the soundtrack. I can tell that a lot of passion and care was put into creating such colorful sonical landscape and I'm in awe.

Inspired by the absolutely mindblowing sonical landscape created by Ben Carney, Chad Mossholder and Mick Gordon, I set out to create a short EP with songs completely inspired by the game and its soundtrack.

After seeing Mick Gordon's GDC video on how he developed his approach to create the sounds you can hear in the soundtrack, I knew I had to abandon my old ways of recording and mixing and just go into a different direction. Therefore I looked past just the heavy guitar, thundering drums and bass that's barely present in the mix, and I turned to noises around and synth sound manipulation.

With that in mind, I played around with a few ideas that were mostly inspired by Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, Front Line Assembly and similar synthwave/EBM artists. I needed to get familiar with that synthetic/eletronic part of the doom soundtrack and I needed to embrace it as my own. Which was not a hard thing to do since I'm a huge fan of Trent Reznor and the aforementioned synthwave artists already.

Combining those two elements was the hardest thing to do. How do I add the intricacies of the electronic music, along with its nuanced and subtle atmosphere, with the brutality and sheer primal sounds of the metal music.

What you hear on this track is my first attempt into doing such a thing.

It's the first example, out of many to come, at how I invisioned and straight up copied the approach of Mick Gordon (ain't ashamed to admit that).

I'm very satisfied with how this track turned out and making it helped to elevate my production skills onto levels I could not phatom just a few months ago. My mind is running wild with ideas and it's exactly what I needed to oil my creative gears in my head and move forward into a more exciting direction.

With all that said, I decided to compose a 4 track EP filled with ideas that derive from my passion towards Doom and it's sonical masterpiece that is the in game sound design and the soundtrack. I have 3 songs written so far and I'm sketching out the ideas for the 4th one. I expect the full album to be mix ready by the early 2022.

I hope you'll enjoy listening to it as much as I did enjoy making it.

Take care good people!
